Homemade Hemp Milk (3 ways)

Strawberry Hemp Milk

This recipe will create a rich, sweet hemp milk. You can use it plain or flavour it how you like - favourites here are strawberry and chocolate milk, but all sorts of combinations will work.

The base milk recipe includes dates and maple syrup, so you won’t need to further sweeten it when adding ingredients to make a milkshake. You can make the base milk more or less sweet, by adding more or less dates and/or maple syrup. We like the combination of both together.

You can also make this with no sweeteners in at all.

The milk can be used perfectly in recipes that call for milk (pancakes, cakes etc.)

The milk is sweet (if you use the full amount of 2 dates and 2 tablespoons of maple syrup). Though the fat and protein content of the milk overall will offset this somewhat.

Hemp seeds are my go-to for makiing dairy-free milk. You don’t need to strain them, and the result is gorgeously creamy. I add coconut oil, for extra creaminess and mouthfeel.

Hemp seeds also have a host of benefits:

  • Rich in protein

  • A great source of essential fatty acids, such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is an omega-3.

  • Anti-inflammatory: The amount of omega-3s in hemp seeds and the seeds’ healthful omega-3 to omega-6 ratio can together help to reduce inflammation.

In addition, hemp seeds are a rich source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid which may also have anti-inflammatory effects.

  • Hemp seeds contain an impressive array of vitamins and minerals and are especially rich in:

    • vitamin E

    • magnesium

    • phosphorous

    • potassium

They are also a good source of iron, zinc, and B vitamins, including:

    • niacin

    • riboflavin

    • thiamine

    • vitamin B-6

    • folate

Ingredients (basic hemp milk base):

1/2 cup organic hulled hemp seeds/hearts (we use these)

3 cups filtered water

1/4 teaspoon Himalayan salt

1 heaped tablespoon coconut oil or grass-fed ghee.

1/8 teaspoon pure vanilla powder or vanilla extract

1-2 medjool dates (adjust to taste) or leave unsweetened if desired

1-2 tablespoons maple syrup (adjust to taste) or leave unsweetened if desired

Optional - 2 tablespoons Bovine Collagen Peptides Powder.

Instructions:

Combine everything in a high-speed blender (we use a Vitamix), blend well on the first then move up to highest setting and serve.

Sadly, this doesn’t seem to heat well (as hot chocolate) and tends to curdle. It is best as cold chocolate milk. Though I am working on it!

To make choclate milk:

Add 2 tablesppons raw cacao and blend well

To make strawberry milk:

Add 5-6 strawberries (fresh or frozen) and blend well
